New Emoji โ€” What You Can Actually Type Today

Announced โ‰  arrived. This page tracks the honest state: emoji finalized in the latest Unicode releases and whether they are in your keyboard yet. Official lists checked against Unicode release charts. Updated November 04, 2026.

The one-line rule: if you can see it rendered below, your device can display it - and tapping it copies the real character, box or not, to send forward.

Emoji 15.1 (finalized 2023) โ€” in phones now

Six additions, the ones you will meet first: the meme-ready shaking face, the two feature-requests finally granted (a real lime, a true black bird instead of recolored crow mappings), the phoenix, and brown mushroom.

Emoji 15.0 (finalized 2022, shipped through 2023)

The food-and-craft batch: ginger root (finally distinct from the hand), folding hand fan, hair pick, flute and wing.

Emoji 16.0 (finalized 2024) โ€” rolling out

Seven additions: face with bags under eyes, fingerprint, leafless tree, root vegetable, harp, shovel and splatter. Expect boxes on older devices until vendor updates land - that is normal rollout, not a broken character.

Three releases, three waves - each lands on phones in its own season.
Three steps: find the emoji, tap copy, paste it anywhere
New or old, the copy flow is the same three taps.

How new emoji actually reach your phone

Three clocks run at once. Unicode finalizes the characters (annually, with minor releases). Vendor fonts - Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft - create the artwork and ship it in OS updates, months later. Apps with their own engines (WhatsApp, Telegram) ship their own renderings on their own schedule. So a July announcement lands on phones between that winter and the next autumn depending on your device. This page copies the raw characters regardless of stage: if your friendโ€™s phone is newer, they see the drawing even if yours shows a box.

How to read rollout confusion in the wild

The most common new-emoji misunderstandings all have the same root - the three clocks above. When a friendโ€™s ๐Ÿซจ shows as a box on your phone, the character arrived; your font has not. When a news article says "emoji of the year," it is describing an announcement, not a keyboard arrival. And when two phones in the same group chat show different drawings for the same character, that is two vendorsโ€™ artwork - not a different emoji. The safe test is this page: if the character renders here for you, your device can display it, and copying sends the real character regardless of what older devices do with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the newest emoji I can use today?

From Emoji 15.1 (2023): shaking face ๐Ÿซจ, black bird ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›, lime ๐Ÿ‹โ€๐ŸŸฉ, phoenix ๐Ÿฆโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ and brown mushroom ๐Ÿ„โ€๐ŸŸซ are in current phone updates. Copy any of them from this page.

Why does an emoji show as a box on some phones?

The senderโ€™s system is newer than the receiverโ€™s font. New emoji reach Android, iOS and WhatsApp updates at different speeds; until then the character shows as a box or question mark. Updating the OS fixes it.

When do new emoji arrive each year?

Unicode finalizes a release roughly once a year (a minor release mid-cycle), and phone vendors ship the artwork in their following updates - usually months after the announcement. The announcement is not the arrival; the keyboard update is.
